How To Get Armed Security Guard License In California
To apply for a security guard registration with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Service (BSIS or Bureau), you must be 18 years old, pass a criminal history background check conducted by the California Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and complete the Power to Arrest course.
Complete
the power to arrest training before the issuance of a Security Guard
Registration. Complete 32 hours of training in security officer skills within
the first six months of registration. And complete the eight hours of
continuing training annually. A certified training facility or a
Bureau-approved course provider administers the training.
Registration Requirements
All
registered security guards should maintain their certificate of completion of
the required training for not less than two years from the completion date.
Employers maintain records for a minimum of two years.
Application
Applicants
may apply for security guard registration online via BreEZe
(https://www.breeze.ca.gov/). Submitting online applications will bypass the
Cashiering Office and can reduce application processing by up to two weeks.
Submit
an application for security guard registration with the application fee by
mail. Application is available at
https://www.bsis.ca.gov/forms_pubs/gappnew.pdf and for application fee
information visit https://www.bsis.ca.gov/forms_pubs/newfees.pdf.
Mail
the completed application and fee to:
Bureau
of Security and Investigative Services
P.O.
Box 989002

A
security guard must have a valid and current security guard registration card.
If approved by the Bureau and have a hardcopy printout of the Bureau's approval
and valid photo identification, he/she can operate as a security guard.
Registrants should expect to receive their registration card in the mail within
three weeks of the Bureau issuing the registration. Guard registrants must keep
a current and valid address on file with the Bureau at all times to help ensure
they receive their renewal notices. The Bureau mails to their address
registrant their registration renewal form approximately 90 days before the
registration expires. Guard registration gets canceled if not renewed within 60
days of expiration. There is no option of renewal after it gets canceled. Then
the new application has to be initiated and processed.
